El término “esquizofrenia” está siendo crecientemente cuestionado. En los últimos años cada vez son más los estudios orientados a discutir su uso. Con el objetivo de conocer la opinión de los psiquiatras en la región latinoamericana, realizamos una encuesta sobre el tema. La misma fue diseñada siguiendo investigaciones previas (Maruta et al., 2014), adaptada y validada para ser usada en dichos profesionales. Los resultados de este trabajo revelan que la mayoría de los psiquiatras latinoamericanos encuestados piensa que el término “esquizofrenia” es estigmatizante y que el trastorno debería ser renombrado, más allá de considerarlo correcto. Es necesario seguir ampliando la discusión a distintas poblaciones de expertos a fin de encontrar un consenso con respecto a este tema.
The term "schizophrenia" is being increasingly questioned. In recent years there are more and more studies aimed at discussing their use. In order to know the opinion of psychiatrists in the Latin American region, we conducted a survey on the subject. It was designed following previous research (Maruta et al., 2014), adapted and validated to be used in these professionals. The results of this study reveal that most of the Latin American psychiatrists surveyed think that the term "schizophrenia" is stigmatizing and that the disorder should be renamed beyond what is considered correct. It is necessary to continue to expand the discussion to different populations of experts in order to find a consensus on this issue.
