García-Marco E, Morera Y, Beltrán D, de Vega M, Herrera E, Sedeño L, Ibáñez A & García AM (2018). Negation markers inhibit motor routines during typing of manual action verbs. Cognition

Subjects typed verbs denoting manual, non-manual, and non-motoric processes.

In this study we investigate the relationship between linguistic denial and motor inhibition. Specifically, through an original keyboard write task, we show that the presence of a negation marker (eg, there is the letter, now you will NOT sign it) selectively extends the time needed to copy the last verb, as long as This describes manual actions. We conclude that the negation inhibits the movements made with the same part of the body that the neglected verbs describe (that is, the hands). This finding offers new perspectives on the cognitive basis of linguistic denial.
